“Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life and those that find it are few.”
This verse from Chapter Seven of Matthew’s Gospel is one of the hard sayings of Jesus. Jesus couldn’t be more clear, and yet we want to believe what the world says. “Broad is the way to heaven and almost everyone gets there,” “Narrow is the way to hell and hardly anyone ends up there, maybe serial killers”.
This idea of universalism, that everyone will be saved because they are good people is just the opposite of what our Lord is saying in the Gospel. We can use this idea to justify our lack of evangelization. “If everyone is going to heaven, why bother?”
But if Jesus is serious, it’s time for us to become the witnesses we were created to be.
