Rediscovering the Purpose of Lent
When Lent begins, many of us immediately think of what we should give up or what we should add to our spiritual routine. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are the traditional pillars of the season, and they remain essential. Yet there is another way to approach this sacred time.
Instead of simply adding more, what if we intensified what we are already doing?
If you pray daily, perhaps this is the season to pray more intentionally, slowing down and truly entering into conversation with God. If you give to others, perhaps it is time to discern where your generosity can make the most meaningful impact. If you fast, consider expanding that practice beyond food. Fasting from media, constant noise, or digital distractions can create space for reflection and clarity.
Lent is a preparation. It is not an end in itself. The purpose of this season is to ready our hearts for Easter, for renewal, for the joy that comes from deeper communion with God.
Rather than focusing on spiritual busyness, Lent invites us to focus on spiritual depth. It is an opportunity to clear away distractions and rediscover what truly anchors us.
At Catholic Way Bible Study, we encourage you to let this Lent be intentional, thoughtful, and transformative. Sometimes the most meaningful growth does not come from adding more, but from going deeper.
