First Communion child's hands in prayer with a rosary. In the fourth century catechumens at the Easter Vigil would process to their First Communion chanting Psalm 23. It turns out Psalm 23 is actually a catechesis of the gateway sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. “He leads me beside still waters.”

We emerge from the still waters of baptism as new creations. “You prepare a table before me.” Once we are baptized into the church, the Lord lays out the banquet of the Eucharist to nourish us, and “You anoint my head with oil.”

In confirmation, our heads are anointed with oil, and we are forever sealed and identified with the cross of Jesus.

And finally, “And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” The Gateway sacraments we have received encourage us all the days of our lives to follow the path of holiness towards our Father’s house.
