Americans, as a whole, are a squeamish people. That’s why in our churches the body of Christ is void of blood other than a few drops at the entry of the nails or the wound in His side. In other cultures, it’s more common to show the bloody effects of the brutality our Savior endured.

Blood is not for the faint of heart. But it is important for us to understand the symbolism and literally receive the Blood of Christ.

In the time of the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were common, and blood was used to mark people and places. “Then take a bunch of hyssop, and dipping it in the blood that is in the basin, apply some of this blood to the lintel and the two doorposts. And none of you shall go outdoors until morning. For when the LORD goes by to strike down the Egyptians, seeing the blood on the lintel and the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over that door and not let the destroyer come into your houses to strike you down.” Exodus 12: 22-23

And blood references are frequent in Leviticus. “for the life of the body is in its blood. I have given you the blood on the altar to purify you, making you right with the Lord. It is the blood, given in exchange for a life, that makes purification possible.” Leviticus 17:11.

Blood represents life, sacrifice and purification. Once we know this, it changes our perception. To be washed in the blood means to accept the salvation that came from Christ’s sacrifice.

“Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. “ Hebrews 9:14

During this month dedicated to the Precious Blood of Jesus, open your heart to a deeper understanding of God’s gift to us and the extent his son Jesus suffered for us to be saved.

“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake. 1 Peter 1:18-20
