In the Gospel of John, Jesus accompanies his mother to a wedding at Cana in Galilee.
At that time and place, a wedding celebration lasted several days. But early in the celebration, disaster strikes: they run out of wine.
Mary, ever sensitive to other’s needs, sees the problem and asks her son to do something, confident that he will do what is needed.
She tells the servants “Do whatever he tells you”, and is proved right.
Jesus performs his first public miracle and turns water into wine.
Not just any wine, but an excellent vintage, bringing honor to his hosts and saving the day.
Even now, Mary is telling us to “do whatever Jesus tells you.”
Even now she points and directs us to her son.
Even now we have a mother in heaven who watches over us.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us.
